Understanding Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO)
Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a common condition that can occur after cataract surgery, leading to blurred or cloudy vision. During cataract surgery, the natural lens of the eye is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). However, the thin capsule that once held the natural lens in place can sometimes become cloudy over time, causing posterior capsule opacification.

Why Does PCO Happen?
Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) develops when epithelial cells remaining in the lens capsule grow and multiply, creating a cloudy layer on the back surface of the capsule. This process can occur months or even years after cataract surgery. Factors that may contribute to PCO include:
- Age (younger patients are more likely to develop PCO).
- Type of intraocular lens (IOL) used during surgery.
- Surgical technique and completeness of lens capsule cleaning.
Symptoms of Posterior Capsule Opacification
If you experience posterior capsule opacification, you may notice:
- Blurred or hazy vision, similar to the symptoms of a cataract.
- Glare or halos around lights, especially at night.
- Reduced contrast sensitivity, making it harder to distinguish objects clearly.
These symptoms can develop gradually and may affect one or both eyes.
Diagnosing and Treating PCO
Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is typically diagnosed during a routine eye examination. Your eye doctor may use a slit lamp to observe the cloudiness on the lens capsule.
The most common and effective treatment for PCO is a YAG laser capsulotomy. This quick, painless procedure uses a laser to create a small opening in the cloudy capsule, restoring clear vision. The procedure is usually performed in an outpatient setting and takes only a few minutes.
If you are unsure whether your symptoms require emergency attention, it is safer to call your healthcare provider or eye clinic for advice.
