The First 24 Hours
Your first day after cataract surgery is critical. Follow these steps to protect your eye and promote healing.

Do:
- Rest as much as possible.
- Wear the protective eye shield provided by your doctor, especially while sleeping.
- Use prescribed eye drops to prevent infection and reduce inflammation.
Don’t:
- Rub or touch your eye—this can dislodge the new lens or introduce infection.
- Drive or operate machinery.
- Bend over or lift heavy objects (anything over 10–15 lbs).
First Week After Surgery
Do:
- Wear sunglasses outdoors to protect your eye from bright light and UV rays.
- Avoid dusty or dirty environments to reduce the risk of infection.
- Follow your doctor’s instructions for using eye drops and medications.
- Shower carefully: Keep water and soap out of your eye. Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, and saunas.
Don’t:
- Swim or use hot tubs—water can introduce bacteria.
- Wear eye makeup (mascara, eyeliner) for at least 1–2 weeks.
- Engage in strenuous activities like jogging, weightlifting, or yoga.
First Month After Surgery
Do:
- Gradually resume light activities like reading, watching TV, or walking.
- Attend all follow-up appointments to monitor healing.
- Eat a healthy diet rich in vitamins (A, C, E) and omega-3 fatty acids to support eye health.
Don’t:
- Play contact sports (e.g., cricket, football) or activities that risk eye injury.
- Ignore symptoms like severe pain, vision loss, or increased redness—contact your doctor immediately.
Long-Term Care
Do:
- Protect your eyes from UV rays with quality sunglasses.
- Monitor your vision and report any changes to your doctor.
- Keep up with regular eye exams to ensure long-term eye health.
Don’t:
- Skip follow-up visits—they’re essential for detecting complications early.
If you are unsure whether your symptoms require emergency attention, it is safer to call your healthcare provider or eye clinic for advice.
