Cataract Surgery Step by Step: Your Complete Guide

Cataract surgery safely restores clear vision by replacing your eye’s cloudy lens with an artificial one. Here’s a clear cataract surgery step by step guide to help you understand each part of the process.

Before Surgery: Preparation

Your eye doctor will first examine your eyes to measure their shape and size. This helps choose the best intraocular lens (IOL) for you. They’ll also check for other eye conditions like glaucoma.

You’ll discuss your medical history and any medications you take. Some medicines, like blood thinners, may need adjustment before surgery. Your doctor will give you instructions, including fasting for 6–12 hours beforehand. Arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure.

You may start using antibiotic or anti-inflammatory eye drops a few days before surgery. These drops help prevent infection and reduce swelling.

During Surgery: What Happens

On surgery day, you’ll receive numbing eye drops or a mild sedative to keep you comfortable. The procedure usually takes just 10–20 minutes per eye.

Your surgeon will make a small incision in your eye. They’ll use ultrasound to break up and remove the cloudy lens. After removing the lens, they’ll insert a clear artificial IOL. The incision is so small that it rarely needs stitches. You’ll rest briefly before going home, but you’ll need a ride.

After Surgery: Recovery Tips

After surgery, your eye might feel slightly gritty or watery. Blurred vision is normal at first but improves quickly. Use the prescribed eye drops to prevent infection and help healing.

You’ll visit your doctor the next day to check your progress. Most people see better within 24–48 hours. Full recovery takes about 4–6 weeks. During this time, avoid rubbing your eye, swimming, or heavy lifting. Wear sunglasses outside to protect your eyes from light.
