Cataracts develop when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy, often due to aging. This cloudiness occurs as proteins in the lens break down and clump together, affecting vision. Other causes include prolonged UV exposure, smoking, diabetes, certain medications (like steroids), eye injuries, or a family history of cataracts.
Cataracts cannot “come back” after surgery, as the natural lens is replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) that does not cloud over. However, some patients may develop a condition called posterior capsule opacification (PCO) months or years later, which mimics cataract symptoms. PCO occurs when a membrane behind the IOL becomes cloudy, but it can be easily treated with a quick, painless laser procedure called YAG capsulotomy to restore clear vision.
